C1 Help for an article describing "something"

The term “an article describing SOMETHING” is really quite a vague matter. On the book two events or ceremonias are described, but you can in fact describe whatever you want.

I tried to find something at

http://writefix.com , but nothing was available.

So I tried by typing “descriptive article” and I came to this page, where you will find more tan one:

I selected two, but you can have a look and plum for the ones you prefer:

Melbourne:

Tokyo  Skytree

And never forget, the secret is easy: first READ, then READ and afterwards, READ AGAIN.

c1 USUFUL FUNCTIONAL LANGUAGE (index card # 1)

USUFUL FUNCTIONAL LANGUAGE

Have you heard about…?

Did you hear about the latest…?

You must have heard about…

Hold your mouth/tongue!

No way! = Not at all! = Not in the least! = Not the slightest! = de ningún modo, en absoluto

It is widely agreed that…

“You always have a shoulder to cry on”

This is just proving me right

Everything goes: todo vale

To come up to the conclusion… (but “to come up WITH an idea”)

To put forward an idea, a plan

There is neither sense, nor meaning

To hunt around for things to say

I’ve been meaning…

I’m keen on…

How are you keeping?

I would like to highlight…

to make somebody’s mind up: convince somebody

To make a point of the situation / of doing something

To be in for something: to be going to experience something unpleasant

very soon: The weather forecast says we're in for heavy rain this evening.

You'll be in for it (= you'll be in trouble) if you don't do what she tells you.

a tit for tat: un toma y daca

what does the future hold (good for an ending)

that doesn’t cut with me: it isn’t my style

by far

spill it out!

“As it butter wouldn’t melt in his/her mouth”

To give yourself a treat

Turning now… (to another issue, to the future, to that report…)

As far as…

Going by the pictures…

To make matters worse

You don’t say! No me digas

¡Qué sé yo!: goodness knows what else/how many other… Also: who can say.

I strongly recommend…

you watch the film

she go (subjunctive)

+ ING

+ NOUN (the film)

To fall for something: dejarse engañar, enamorarse de algo

I had a gut feeling (to feel something is right)

If I cast my mind back…

To catch somebody out: to show that someone is doing wrong

Trendy, in vogue, in fashion,

I beg to differ with you on that point

Day in, day out: everyday

Round the clock: 24 hours a day

What’s up, doc?

To get on (or well) with somebody like a house on fire

To comply: (C1)  to act according to an order, set of rules, or request. Failure to comply / To comply with your duty; He's been ordered to have the dog destroyed because it's dangerous, but he refuses to comply. There are serious penalties for failure to comply with the regulations.

To hog a conversation/the road: to dominate it

Tread (C2): mainly UK: to put your foot on something or press something down with your foot:

kept treading on his toes when we were dancing.

Yuck! Look what I've just trodden in!

load of food had been trodden into the carpet.

We are treading on very thin ice.

To fall back on something: to use something for help because no other choice is available: The organization has no income and no reserves to fall back on.

C1 Characteristics of different sort of writings

AN ARTICLE

- It has a TITLE
- may contain a RETHORICAL QUESTION
- It employs COLLOQUIAL PHRASES
- It is NOT exhaustvely (overly, ovthoroughly) DESCRIPTIVE
- UNPRETENCIOUS
- It uses SHORT FORMS (prep, veg, pro...)
- It uses ACTIVE VOICE and SECOND PERSON PLURAL (or singular?)
- Use of CONTRACTIONS
- Use of IMPERATIVE
- DIRECT and COLLOQUIAL LANGUAGE

AN ESSAY

(still in progress)

C1 Dealing with MODAL AUXILIARIES

I usually say we should think in English instead od translating directly from our mother tongue, but for once in my life I will tell the opposite thing: when using the modal auxiliaries, I consider the easiest way to master them all is by means of translation. Thus, you don't have to care about this or that intention or subtle nuance of significance, but just use them as you would do in Spanish.

Take note of these:

MAY: poder (presente de indicativo). For "Zero Conditionals" or in phrases relating present time.

MIGHT: podría (condicional). Much more direct  than substituting it by "would perhaps" or "would just possibly" (¿¿¿¿solo posiblemente????)

COULD: "podía" or "podría"  (MIGHT BE ABLE TO, "sería capaz de")

WOULD: is the simplest form, and it is used to form the conditional; it stands for our verb ending (desinencia) -"ía", such as in "iría", "cogería"...)

(entry still in progress)

Speaking - Monologues - Ideas/Tips Upper Intermediate/Advanced

Here you'll find two links to sites with indications and samples for monologues and dialogues:

Bookmark and Share

Monologues in Speaking Tests at the Upper Intermediate level are usually a few minutes (4, 6) and before that you may be given 10 minutes to think about what you want to say – sometimes you can take notes, or do an outline to bring into the exam room, but you can't read them, of course. At other times, they give you the outline (the topic with 3 points to mention), so you don't have to brainstorm on ideas to tackle . These ideas could be jumbled, so before dealing with them, remember to arrange them in the nicest (most logical) order possible.

Check out our Communicative Strategies section for ideas on this and on textual structure. Remember to give a good beginning, with no grammar mistakes – a good intro for the topic. If you cannot think of one, present the outline of the points you are going to address.

I'm adding some ideas to the topics, so you can pick some to practice. Remember to time yourself (e.g. 3 points in 4 minutes).

You have between 5 and 6 minutes to discuss one of the following topics together.

You are required to use vocabulary and grammar structures which we have studied.
Please make use of the 'opinion' work-sheet which I gave you at the beginning of the academic year.

Try to discuss these issues giving both sides. At times you will have to argue 'against' what your partner has said in order to extend and deepen the discussion.
The objective is to interact at conversational level, not to win a debate!
